High density polyethylene (HDPE)



High density polyethylene (HDPE) is the largest of the three polyethylenes (PE) by volume of consumption. It has a very linear structure with only a few short side branches leading to a higher density range as well as a more crystalline structure. It is defined by a density of greater or equal to 0.941 g/cm3. HDPE has a low degree of branching and thus stronger intermolecular forces and tensile strength.

A linear polymer, High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is prepared from ethylene by a catalytic process. The absence of branching results in a more closely packed structure with a higher density and somewhat higher chemical resistance than LDPE. HDPE is also somewhat harder and more opaque and it can withstand rather higher temperatures (1200 Celsius for short periods, 1100 Celsius continuously). High density polyethylene lends itself particularly well to blow molding, e.g. for bottles, cutting boards, dipping baskets, dippers, trays and containers. A major outlet for HDPE is in blow-molding applications such as bottles for milk and other non-carbonated drinks, drums, fuel tanks for automobiles, toys and household goods. Because HDPE has good chemical resistance, it is used for packaging many household and industrial chemicals such as detergents, bleach and acids.

Pipes made from Polyethylene (HDPE) is a cost effective answer for a number of piping problems in Metropolitan, Municipal, Industrial, Underwater, Mining, Landfill Gas extraction, Cable duct and agricultural applications. It has been tested and proven effective for underground, above ground, surface, under water as well as floating pipe applications. These pipes can carry potable water, wastewater, slurries, chemicals, hazardous wastes, cables and compressed gases as well as oils.
